Bone Cancer

Research

A principal research effort is directed toward developing an innovative custom compliant fixation system for massive skeletal reconstruction that avoids the use of bone cement and prolongs implant longevity. Another intensive area of investigation is the use of pre-operative chemotherapy and brachytherapy radiation catheters for adult soft tissue sarcomas.

Benign bone lesions are being addressed with liquid nitrogen cryospray therapy, while packing is performed with bone cement or coralline hydroxyapatite to minimize complications associated with traditional grafts. Post-operative prostheses that optimize recovery in instances of amputation also are under study.

In addition, bisphosphonate medication studies are underway to determine the potential for stopping the progression of cancer that has metastasized to bone.

Clinical Trials

Our patients have the opportunity to participate in research, called clinical trials, that make new medications, treatments and surgical procedures available before they're distributed to the general public.

Information about clinical trials for colorectal cancer can be found at www.ucsfhealth.org/clinicaltrials or on the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center Web site.
